Discussion
Original and Emended diagnosis based on dental features after Vullo, Guinot & Barbe, 2016 [23744]. Rather small-sized species. Anterior teeth with slender, not very high crown; cutting edges not reaching the base of the main cusp; one pair of sharp, high lateral cusplets, bent posteriorly, and with cutting edges localized apically. Root with short branches and a clear groove. In lateral teeth, the crown becomes broader and more bent distally; there are two pairs of rather broad lateral cusplets, the proximal one being more developed than the distal one. In more lateral teeth, the crown widens; there are one distal and two mesial cusplets; root with broad, flat basal face bearing a clear groove. The enamel is always smooth and the outer (labial) face of the crown slightly overhangs the root (Cappetta & Case 1975, translated from French).
Emended diagnosis. Rather small-sized lamniform shark, about 1_1.2 m in total length. Snout short and ‘flattened bell-shaped’. Broad head (»15% of total length) with maximum width at level of eyes. Cranium broader than long (ratio D 1.20). Rostral cartilages relatively short; lateral and mesial rostral cartilages equally developed; rostral node bifid (presence of rostral wings). Nasal capsules well developed and laterally expanded, well separated from each other. Nasal apertures large. Supraorbital crests absent. Preorbital processes relatively short, originating from the posterolateral margin of the nasal capsules. Postorbital processes long, slender, narrow-based, anteriorly convex, projecting laterally, and in anterior position (i.e. originating relatively far from the posterior margin of the skull). Electrosensory ampullary system characterized by alveolar ampullae devoid of canal and embedded in specialized, pierced dermal denticles. Five (occasionally four or six) alveoli per ampulla. Dentition showing disjunct monognathic and very weak dignathic heterodonty. Dental formula: 16_17 tooth files (two parasymphysial, two anterior, eight lateral, four to five posterior teeth) per upper half jaw and 14_15 tooth files (one parasymphysial, two anterior, eight lateral, three to four posterior teeth) per lower half jaw. No intermediate files between anterior and lateral files in both upper and lower jaws. Anterior teeth slender with a single pair of lateral cusplets. Lateral teeth labiolingually compressed, with a sigmoid mesial cutting edge and one or two pairs of lateral cusplets. Crown faces smooth. Root holaulacorhize. Teeth osteodont. Pectoral fins relatively long, aplesodic with short glenoid surface. Pectoral fin apex angular. Vertebrae of radial asterospondylous pattern.
